180 FW Munitions Maintenance and Storage Complex Design

When the 180th Fighter Wing (FW) assumed the Aerospace Control Alert mission from Selfridge Air National Guard Base, additional munitions maintenance and storage capabilities were required to support the mission and sustain operational readiness. To equip the home of the 180 FW for this demand, Woolpert provided complete architecture, engineering design and construction phase services for a new munitions maintenance and storage complex.

The complex, which consists of five facilities arranged over a 20-acre site, required delicate planning due to the explosive nature of the facilities’ functions. The site houses multiple missile maintenance and munitions storage facilities. Challenges were further compounded by close proximity to the airfields and high-security requirements.

Despite these challenges, the facilities stand as models for sustainable design. Several of the buildings were designed and documented to meet LEED® Silver Certification standards, and alternative energy sources, such as photovoltaic fields and solar hot water systems, were incorporated into the design. Although the building layout required physical separation to adhere to blast zone restrictions, the necessary paving for interconnectivity was kept to a minimum to maximize green space. Special protection also was extended to the nearby mature oak grove and wetlands.
