Barkley Elementary School Design

Barkley Elementary School is one of the first schools designed under the Department of Defense Education Activity’s (DoDEA) new 21st-century education charter, an initiative that seeks to provide modern learning environments that facilitate a wide range of educational and instructional techniques. This forward-thinking project earned LEED™ Silver certification in 2017 and won an Architectural Design Award from Learning by Design.

Designed by Woolpert, the new school houses 740 students in approximately 142,000 square feet. Completed in 2016, the new learning center replaced its 1955 predecessor with construction materials and high-performing systems that consume one-third of the energy of comparable buildings. The design team incorporated multiple elements that support 21st-century education philosophies, including harvesting natural lighting, utilizing a geothermal HVAC system, employing a thermal envelope to boost insulation performance and using solar energy for water heating.

An energy dashboard, photovoltaic array, tubular daylighting, LEED signage, visible mechanical room and green roof area provide numerous opportunities for the integration of sustainable systems into the school’s curriculum.
