LITTLE HUNTING CREEK WATERSHED MANAGEMENT PLAN

Project Details

CLIENT
Fairfax County, Virginia

LOCATION
Fairfax County, VA

The citizens of the area surrounding Little Hunting Creek desired to address issues and concerns regarding the watershed’s sedimentation, riparian buffer loss, paved land cover, wetland loss and polluted runoff. These conditions threatened the wildlife population as well as fish and aquarium habitation and placed the area in danger of a hazardous flood that would affect humans and nature alike.

Woolpert was selected to work with various governmental departments of Fairfax County and its citizens to develop a watershed management plan capable of protecting and restoring the receiving water systems and other natural resources of the watershed. Data was compiled from various sources to prepare a baseline condition assessment. Further, technical analyses were performed to identify flooding, channel erosion and water quality problems in each watershed under current and predicted ultimate development conditions. Upon collecting such data, Woolpert developed non-structural and structural watershed management alternatives to mitigate problems caused by urbanization of the surrounding area. These solutions will be monitored to evaluate the success or failure of the action and will allow the county to make adjustments to the plan accordingly. As a result of this citizen initiative, the Little Hunting Creek watershed and its habitation will be better prepared to coexist with human activity.
