MYRTLE/MOREHEAD STORM WATER DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT

Project Details

CLIENT
City of Charlotte

LOCATION
Charlotte, NC

As the fifth-fastest growing city among large U.S. cities and the fastest growing city on the East Coast according to 2006 estimates, Charlotte is currently the largest city in North Carolina and the 20th largest in America. To accommodate its continuous economic growth and ensure that the city is capable of further development in its business sector, Woolpert is providing an alternative analysis and design services to the city for its Myrtle/Morehead storm water drainage improvement project.

This project will ultimately alleviate surface flooding while conveying flows to the major system.

Woolpert initially studied the land area in an effort to evaluate the existing drainage system’s hydraulic capacity and condition while developing a cost-effective improvement plan for the highly urbanized area. A detailed hydraulic model was developed for both the existing system and for design alternatives for the analysis, which involved a hydrologic analysis and a hydraulic analysis. The resulting model for the study area simulates over 100 links and junctions representing more than 8,000 feet of enclosed storm water to serve the critical infrastructure needs of major customers in downtown Charlotte. This project will ultimately alleviate surface flooding while conveying flows to the major system, allowing Charlotte to continue its growth and development.
