At the request of the Montgomery County Engineer, the Dayton Northland Village Apartments selected Woolpert to inspect a bridge within the complex. Woolpert found major structural issues in the bridge (which spans a tributary of the Great Miami River) that resulted in the posting of the bridge and prevention of emergency vehicle passage. Because the apartments on the opposite side of the bridge can only be reached by crossing the bridge—and were to remain occupied during construction—the owner procured Woolpert’s services to fast-track the bridge replacement design.

Woolpert presented several options to the client; the selected option was a 30-foot wide by 45-foot long, single-span, composite reinforced deck on pre-stressed concrete box beam superstructure on integral abutments on steel H-piles. Driven by minimal cost, short construction time and lack of waterway impact, the design included a temporary bridge to maintain traffic during construction.

Woolpert coordinated the utility relocation, developed traffic plans (for the temporary bridge and pavement replacement) and assisted the client with civil engineering portions of the project. Woolpert continues to provide oversight to the client during the bidding process and will assist in construction management activities as well.
