With projected enrollment of more than 24,000 by 2020, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) faces the challenge of meeting the housing needs of its growing student population. And as a college established more than 120 years ago, some of UNCG’s existing residence halls date back to the early 1900s.

As a result, Woolpert (in association with Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company, our partner in design) designed a comprehensive renovation of and addition to seven early 1900s residence hall buildings that comprise the historical campus quadrangle.

UNCG’s $46 million investment created an opportunity for the design team to reimagine the quad buildings and their connection to the overall campus. The design solution transformed what was originally an insular community of residences into a living-learning destination that will become a new campus gateway for all students.

The building interiors were completely gutted and overhauled for a new suite-style room layout, complete with private bathrooms and all new building systems.

The new learning component was woven into the residence halls through enhanced common areas, seminar room additions, and study rooms. New ramps, elevators, and other ADA amenities were incorporated to make the buildings and site accessible to all students.

The new quad gateway carved through the middle of one building, creating both a literal and symbolic connection between the new quad landscape and the overall campus.

The significance of the quad buildings to the campus’ historical fabric was reflected in a design solution that aimed to preserve the nostalgia of the existing buildings while introducing new features and amenities that will continue to draw students to the heart of the campus for years to come.
