Johns Honored as ‘Mover & Shaker’ in Stormwater, Erosion Control Industry

  • Woolpert’s water resource discipline leader, J.P. Johns PE, was honored this month as a Storm Water Solutions Mover & Shaker. The trade publication recognized Johns among those whose work has shaped the stormwater and erosion control industry.

    As noted by the publication, Johns has more than 16 years of experience in watershed management and expertise in hydrology, erosion control, sedimentology, hydraulic analysis of urban waterways, flood plain management, watershed master planning, stream restoration, and post-construction water quality analysis and design.

    In its recognition, the magazine also lauded Johns’ work on producing industry standards and specifications, which Johns also cited as a highlight of his career so far.

    “The work we’ve done with SCDOT (South Carolina Department of Transportation) in the creation of new standard specifications for erosion prevention and sediment control have helped advance the industry,” he said.

    Johns, who has been with Woolpert for 13 years, is a member of APWA and supports the South Carolina chapter. He is a member of the South Carolina Association of Stormwater Managers and was the 2014-15 Blue Ridge Foothills District chairman for the Water Environment Association of South Carolina, and sits on the ASTM D18 and C27 committees.

Johns is currently the vice president of the Southeast Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA), and was the 2014 recipient of the IECA Sustained Contributor Award. The Sustained Contributor Award recognizes an IECA member who has provided distinguished service to the IECA and has made outstanding contributions to improve the erosion and sediment control industry for a sustained period of time.

Johns said he was honored by the Storm Water Solutions recognition, as it highlights the progressive work he’s accomplished with Woolpert and promotes the continued evolution and refinement of the stormwater industry.

“Stormwater solutions are an iterative process,” he said. “To advance the industry, you can’t be complacent, you are always looking for ways to improve.”
