Woolpert’s Geospatial Management Gives Intel Ireland a Single Source of Truth Across All Trade Partners
Client Overview
Intel Ireland is the Irish subsidiary of Intel Corporation, one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies. It operates a major semiconductor manufacturing campus in Leixlip, County Kildare, which has served as a key part of Intel’s manufacturing operations for more than three decades.
Industry
Semiconductor Manufacturing / Technology
Location
Leixlip, County Kildare, Ireland
Company size
Approximately 4,900 employees in Ireland
Challenge
Semiconductor fabrication facilities are among the most technically demanding built environments in the world, where a single alignment error of even a millimeter can result in month-long delays and millions in rework.
These risks are only exacerbated by the involvement of multiple contractors. From electricians and pipefitters to plumbers and wire installers, each relies on their own technical drawings. When these drawings differ, as they often do, the risk of misalignment and clashes increases significantly.
For Intel Ireland, precise coordination and measurement were top priorities as it undertook a multi-billion-euro upgrade of its Leixlip campus, one of the company’s largest European expansion programs to date.
With multiple contractors and trade partners working within a dense, dimensionally constrained fabrication environment, maintaining a single, consistent spatial control and measurement reference framework was essential to project success.
Solution
Woolpert delivered the spatial control framework for Intel Ireland’s Leixlip campus expansion program, establishing the baseline control network, measurement standards, and common data foundation used across all contractors.
Woolpert’s geospatial management approach included maintaining high-accuracy control networks across the campus, standardizing quality assurance and quality control processes across trades, and integrating scan-to-building information model (BIM) workflows with the project’s baseline model.
By integrating precision survey data with BIM management, Woolpert governed how field measurements were captured, validated, and tied back to the project model. This provided every contractor and trade partner with a single source of truth to drive accurate positioning, streamline field coordination, and monitor progress in real time.
Results
The shared spatial and digital baseline helped improve installation readiness, reduce risk during construction, and eliminate the need for measurement-driven rework in validated areas.
Having a single, consistent spatial control and measurement reference framework also improved construction agility and tool installation readiness, supporting faster delivery, fewer delays, and accurate facility documentation throughout the project life cycle.
Additionally, the trusted digital baseline established through Woolpert’s model-to-field verification will aid Intel Ireland’s future modernization efforts, including tool moves and retrofit planning.
In comparable programs where Woolpert employed the same geospatial management approach, resolving clashes before they reached the field resulted in reductions of up to 50% or more in requests for information and rework.
On one such program, 445 issues were identified during the first 14 months of the project, when it was 72% complete. Each issue was resolved before reaching the field, resulting in average cost savings of approximately 9,200 U.S. dollars per clash avoided.
We have worked with Woolpert for over 20 years. Woolpert manages nearly every type of measurement, from survey control grids to laser-scan captures across base builds, AMHS, tool installs, and progressive builds. Their experience in fab construction and geospatial management has helped resolve legacy issues, like multiple grids and misalignments, while establishing a single source of truth for all trades to use during construction. These efforts have demonstrated measurable improvements in the quality and accuracy of our models, which will be invaluable to future modernizations.
