South Carolina County Targeting Invasive Species During Stream Stabilization Projects

Zach Smoot, an engineer phase manager for Woolpert, worked with former Woolpert Environmental Scientist Shady Agnew, Water Market Director J.P. Johns, and Project Manager and Engineer Crystal Muller to share the consequences of invasive plant species for Storm Water Solutions magazine.

Using Woolpert’s work in Greenville County, S.C., as an example, they share how mitigating this growing threat improves water quality, human and animal health, fishing, agriculture, and much more.

"We're seeing the negative side effects of some of these invasive plants," said J.P. Johns, water market director at Woolpert. "In wetland areas in particular, certain invasives don't support the ecosystem. People are realizing that these non-native invasive plants that have been established, whether by mistake or on purpose, are causing negative impacts in their communities."
