In designing and developing Disney Cruise Lines’ private island, Gorda Cay, the Disney Company wanted to craft onshore the same unique theme experience found on their cruise vessels. Disney retained Woolpert as part of a design/build team to theme, master plan, and design as well as provide marine engineering and structural services for the entire island.

Working with Disney’s planners, Woolpert developed a storyline based on the concept that castaways from an airplane wreck had developed the island. Marine work associated with the project included the creation of a harbor, pier, and mooring structures with capacity to accommodate a 1,000-foot cruise ship.
