Project Details

CLIENT
Department of Defense Education Activity

LOCATION
DoDEA schools throughout Europe

To support the Department of Defense Education Activity’s (DoDEA) goal of prioritizing and developing future school projects and requirement to provide annual status reports to Congress, Woolpert was tasked with collecting and organizing data about DoDEA schools across the globe.

Woolpert conducted assessments of over 2 million square feet of pre-K through 12th-grade school and administrative facilities spread across 87 buildings. The project focused on the following assessment categories:

  • Level 1 and 2 conditions
  • Life safety
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
  • Functional adequacy
  • Playgrounds

In 11 short weeks, three teams of experts in architecture; mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineering; and playground standards completed all field surveys. To accelerate the process, Woolpert developed a new field application and cost-estimating tool, SuMMiT, which enabled assessors to collect data in the field using pen-top computers. Woolpert also estimated and recorded building system deficiencies (including HVAC) and documented each school with approximately 1,000 photographs. All final data was uploaded to a worldwide database.
