The Martin Luther King Jr. and Richard B. Russell federal buildings in downtown Atlanta are home to several federal offices as well as the U.S. District Courts for the area. The buildings, managed by GSA, have been undergoing renovations for a number of years to meet LEED® standards.

Woolpert performed terrestrial scanning of approximately 500 locations that included the entire exteriors of both buildings as well as several floors within the interiors to support BIM modeling of the buildings. The high-security nature of the facilities required extensive background checks and coordination to ensure there were no delays, and each day brought its own set of challenges to overcome.

Surveyors used scanners mounted on rolling carts to eliminate the downtime caused by the continuous setting up and tearing down involved in projects with multiple scan locations. They also used Android tablets onsite, which allowed them to perform QA/QC of the scans in the field and made it easier to acquire targets.
