New Breed of Data Centers in Urbanized Environments
Data Center, Gore Hill, NSW, Australia
NEXTDC S3 Design
Greenbox, a wholly owned subsidiary of Woolpert, designed NEXTDC’s third data center in Sydney, representing a new breed of data centers in urbanized environments.
Located across the boundary of industrial and residential zoning, and one of the first multi-level data centers in Sydney, this building deftly addresses the absolute height limit where transmissions from the neighboring ABC transmission tower cannot be affected.
The façade draws on the idea of repetition and regular rhythm to create order, with vertical blades conceived as a modern take on a classical column structure. The repetition of the vertical elements on the façade creates a strong rhythm breaking down the perceived length of the building.
The expression of the service risers on the façade provides both a sense of what’s inside and what the building’s purpose is and also contributes to the data center achieving Uptime Tier IV certification.
