Private Hangar Design and Construction Management at John C. Tune Airport

The private hangar facility included significant airside design elements that must comply with FAA operational requirements. This effort balanced client expectations, MNAA requirements, and state/federal aviation agency guidelines. Woolpert will bring this same level of service and proficiency to your proposed project.

Woolpert was selected by Jet Access to support the construction of a new hangar up-scale facility at John C. Tune Airport (JWN), owned and operated by Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority (MNAA). This project is part of a larger hangar development initiative undertaken by JWN’s sponsor, MNAA. The facility design is based on the conceptual renderings Woolpert delivered to Jet Access as part of the latter’s RFQ response to the airport.

Along with the full design of the 24,740-square-foot (SF) facility, Woolpert is providing full construction documents and specifications required to obtain building and construction permits. The interior is divided into two areas (22,000 SF of hangar space and 2,750 SF of office/support space) and will feature a bi-parting style hangar door, secure parts and tool storage, large circulating fans, vehicle garage door, restrooms with showers, pilot rest area, employee break room, two conference rooms, three offices, and a lobby area featuring high-end design elements. The design also included a unique exterior styling with a mixture of gray and ebony tones and a dramatic covered entry with distinctive lighting elements. The tight site includes a parking lot (15–20 spaces), security fence and gates, a 12,000-gallon fuel farm tank with a blast fence, apron pavement, lighting, and signage.

Jet Access has worked with Woolpert to design and construct a custom hangar at Indianapolis Regional Airport (MQJ) that will eventually be connected to a custom headquarters facility for which Woolpert has already provided preliminary design. Jet Access had been so impressed with the services, they requested custom renderings to submit with their RFQ to JWN for this Custom Hangar project, allowing them to be awarded the project. Jet Access and Woolpert are also in the process of developing other projects due to the close relationship they have developed.

The team’s deliverables consisted of final construction drawings, technical specifications, and updated renderings. The team only provided limited front-end documentation as Jet Access did not have a need to publicly bid the project and was already working with a local contractor. Woolpert’s thorough coordination, existing understanding of client/sponsor requirements, and airside/landside development expertise enabled the team to meet the client’s design expectations.
