Miami Valley Career Tech Center and Woolpert Partner to Grow High-tech Jobs in Dayton Area
October 31, 2011
DAYTON, Ohio (October 31, 2011)… The Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC) and Woolpert, a national geospatial, design and infrastructure management consulting firm headquartered in Dayton, have recently partnered to support the growth of high-tech jobs in the Dayton area through development of an MVCTC GIS program.
One of MVCTC’s newest courses, GIS and Technical Intelligence Tech Prep, was developed in partnership with Woolpert, which provides GIS, mapping and surveying services to federal, state/local and private-sector clients across the U.S. Through this course, students learn about geospatial information systems, GPS data collection and analysis as well as the applications these technologies and processes have on fields such as military intelligence, urban planning and remote sensing.
“While many disciplines in our industry aren’t experiencing growth, the demand for geospatial jobs continues to increase despite the economic downturn. We are proud to support MVCTC’s desire to provide area students with the means to get an edge on geospatial knowledge prior to entering the workforce or pursuing higher education,” said Jeff Lovin, Woolpert senior vice president and director of geospatial services.
MVCTC is committed to preparing Miami Valley high school students for the demands of today’s workforce. By partnering with local business and industry leaders such as Woolpert, MVCTC is able to ensure students are receiving the skills necessary to be, and stay employed in this unstable economy. The Woolpert partnership provides MVCTC students with guest speakers, field trips, mentoring and job placement opportunities. “MVCTC has one of only two GIS high school programs in the state of Ohio. With the support of Woolpert, MVCTC students have the opportunity to experience a new and evolving career field,” said Rhonda Phillips, MVCTC Business and Information Technology Supervisor.
Woolpert has a history of hiring students who have attended MVCTC. Most recently, the firm permanently hired a student interning at the firm who completed the GIS and Technical Intelligence Tech Prep course.
