Project Manager, Geographer Nathan Hopper Joins Woolpert’s National Security Market

BAY SAINT LOUIS, Miss. (April 25, 2018) — Woolpert has hired Nathan Hopper, Ph.D., as a program manager in its National Security market. Hopper, a geographic information system specialist, most recently worked at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) and the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVO) as a physical and geospatial scientist.

Hopper earned his doctorate in geography from the University of Southern Mississippi, which fostered critical spatial thinking, operational and applied research perspectives. This skillset allowed him to help NRL and NAVO transform data into actionable information, and ultimately gain knowledge of how the environment impacted missions.

Woolpert Vice President and National Security Market Director Joseph Seppi said Hopper’s operational experience and his extensive geographic and geospatial background support the firm’s goals and trajectory.

“Oceanographic and hydrographic services are a major part of Woolpert’s offerings,” Seppi said. “Nate brings a focus and level of experience to Woolpert and our Mississippi-based team that will help us serve growing customer needs in the region and nationally.”

Hopper said one of the main reasons he came to Woolpert was the firm’s ability to comprehensively address customer needs.

“Woolpert is unique in the field because the firm has multiple disciplines—architecture, engineering and geospatial—and industry leaders that can work together to provide flexible solutions,” he said. “As technology advances at a rapid pace, the ability to draw from all of these areas allows Woolpert to be extremely flexible in how we solve problems. This flexibility stems from design, data collection, processing and, ultimately, the delivery of actionable information.”

Hopper said he is looking forward to working with the National Security team, as well as with thought leaders throughout the firm.

“Tobler’s first law of geography says it best: ‘Everything is related to everything else, but near things are more related than distant things,’” Hopper said. “This is a key concept not only in physical geography, but in human geography as well; having all of Woolpert’s services and disciplines together allows for a stronger team and greater project success.”
