How to Succeed in Your First Job—Tips from a Recruiter

Dear new graduate,

Congrats on landing your first professional job! Don’t worry if you feel a bit overwhelmed; after all, switching from college life to professional life isn’t easy. The good news is that the AEG industry is filled with thoughtful and experienced folks rooting for your success, and they have a lot of generous advice to share with you along your journey.

I recently reached out to some of Woolpert’s industry-leading professionals for their advice on succeeding in AEG. Over half a dozen company leaders reflected on their own journeys and shared some words of wisdom, which I’ve collected for you here.

Resolve to be a doer. Take a job that requires you to get your hands dirty with real work, no matter your long-term goals or aspirations. The experience will help you grow into a more credible manager later in your career. Plus, getting down to the nitty gritty often has the added benefit of being fun! Stay curious, be persistent and practice being a good listener. Growing your technical and communication skill sets are crucial at this stage of your career.

It sounds cliché, but hard work really does matter. Nearly every professional I spoke with mentioned a strong work ethic as a secret to their success. Don’t be afraid to outwork those around you. Keep thinking creatively and confidently. Practice communicating technical solutions in simple language, and focus on expanding your knowledge base. Think about the intersection of advancing technology and traditional engineering—such as applying IoT solutions to HVAC maintenance issues. In other words, apply your professional knowledge to solutions outside your comfort zone.

Seek and welcome opportunities for mentorship. Listening to your mentors is so important, and remember—nothing replaces face-to-face interactions. Building relationships is crucial to your success, and the best way to build relationships that matter is to prove your worth by applying yourself to your craft. Your reputation will precede you, and it will open doors. And don’t forget—the industry is small. Never burn bridges.

Network, network, network! Attend local and regional networking events, present at industry conferences, and get involved in political and economic groups. Arrive early and stay late, because the real networking happens before and after the main meeting. And always do your homework before events. You'll be more productive in your conversations with decision-makers and technical thought leaders.

Finally, as you shape your career, focus your decision-making around core values like passion, collaboration and quality. Take (or make!) opportunities to experience different areas of your company, exceeding your own goals along the way. Don't spend a lot of time worrying about your title, position or salary. When you work for the best manager at the best company, the rest will follow.

Never stop learning. Watch and listen. Always ask questions.

Good luck!

Sincerely,
Sam Finke
