Woolpert Completes First Phase of Enterprise GIS Development for Land Development Firm

HOUSTON, Texas (Nov. 11, 2019) — Woolpert was contracted by a land development company in Houston, Texas, to develop a Proof of Concept for developing an enterprise GIS system to improve and advance business functions and communications. Phase One of this contract was recently completed, and the second phase is now underway.

This land development company manages its nationwide commercial, residential and mixed-use properties using a wide range of tools, from paper markups to using spatial data locally through desktop GIS and CAD software. After an evaluation, GIS was determined to be the most appropriate method for tracking this company’s property developments.

In the first phase of this contract, Woolpert introduced Esri’s ArcGIS® Online (AGOL) to create a visualization application interface for staff collaboration, project information and project marketing data. The Visualization Web Application and AGOL Portal enabled staff and clients to access necessary data and expand analytical capabilities within a secure, user-friendly environment.

The second phase of this contract entails the creation of GIS/CAD standards, financial data integration, and data and app creation based on user preference and GIS support. The GIS/CAD standards will be appropriate to the data requirements of the development firm and will allow for extract, transfer, load (ETL) tools to be created and managed in multiple formats.

When the GIS/CAD standards are in place and the firm’s data has been converted to adhere to these standards, a unique identifier will be created to link financial data to location-based assets. Targeted apps will allow planners, engineers, financiers, marketers, managers, etc., to access information specific to their needs.

To complete this enterprise GIS system implementation, geospatial data, apps, maps and dashboards will be embedded into or linked to desktop or web applications for personnel to utilize. Since the firm does not have a GIS staff, hardware and software infrastructure additions have been and will be kept minimal. Training and related materials will provide continual guidance for staff.

This project is on schedule for a March completion.
