Curing Cancer, One Mile at a Time

Woolpert once again proudly supported one of its own, Roads and Bridges Design Practice Leader Ron Mattox, for his participation in the annual Pelotonia bike ride.

Hosted in Columbus, Ohio, Pelotonia is one of the largest single-event cycling fundraisers befitting cancer research in the United States. In 2017, Mattox completed his seventh year as a Pelotonia rider. To date, he has pedaled total of 1,180 miles toward Pelotonia’s movement to end cancer.

Beginning in February, Mattox spent six months training and raising funds to meet his goal of $2,500. One of 8,022 riders to participate in 2017, Mattox biked 180 miles over two days.

Beginning on Saturday, Aug. 5, in Columbus, Mattox rode 100 miles to stay overnight at Kenyon College in Gambier. He continued the second leg of the journey on Sunday, riding back to the finish line in New Albany. And the Woolpert team was there along the route to cheer him on.

“The ride this year was great with a fantastic turnout of riders and volunteers. It was a beautiful weekend, and I am glad that I trained carefully for the ride,” said Mattox. “It was wonderful to see so many cheering us on. Many are cancer survivors or have lost loved ones to the disease. It’s really inspiring to see everyone come together.”

Woolpert applauds Mattox for his dedication and commitment to Pelotonia 17. Headquartered in Ohio, Woolpert is proud to support the communities in which it operates and lives, encouraging all employees to be positive stewards and neighbors. As a demonstration of this commitment, the company again donated to Mattox’s fundraising efforts.

“Ron’s a practice leader setting an amazing example for the rest of the firm. We have experienced loss in the Woolpert community due to cancer, and anytime we have the ability to combat it individually and together, we will. We are a family and that means working to end cancer together,” said Woolpert Transportation Market Director, Tom Mochty.

Pelotonia is a grassroots organization that contributes 100% of rider-raised dollars directly to The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center—Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. Since its inception in 2008, Pelotonia has funded and awarded 89 idea grants and 399 fellowships as well as provided support for 63 senior scientists.
