Runway 18-36 and Taxiway B Rehabilitation

Woolpert provided design and construction administration services for the pavement rehabilitation of Runway 18/36 and Taxiway B; furthermore, a portion of Taxiway B was removed and replaced with a new midfield taxiway connector.

Pavement Maintenance

The concrete pavement on Runway 18/36 was generating large amounts of foreign object debris and showed signs of distress and failure. The pavement, last rehabilitated in 2007, required full-depth removal/replacement of all concrete panels and joint sealant, crack and spall repairs, and pavement marking.

Airfield Design

The perpendicular intersection of Taxiway B and parallel Taxiway A put IRK out of compliance with FAA safety standards. To ensure airfield safety, the part of Taxiway B between Runway 18/36 and parallel Taxiway A was removed, and a connector taxiway created closer to the Runway 18 end. Woolpert, in coordination with IRK, Missouri Department of Transportation-Aviation, and FAA staff, ensured the design met all applicable standards and the airport remained eligible for federal AIP funds.

Because the entire length of Runway 18/36 had to be rehabilitated, Woolpert established and implemented an accelerated 115-day construction schedule. The phasing plan ensured that all times during construction, at least one runway end was operable. The team also completed all stormwater and electrical infrastructure elements of the project.
