While the World Gains a Trillion Trees, the U.S. May Lose Nearly a Million Miles of Streams

Woolpert Senior Strategic Consultant David Wegner worked with Kevin Coulton, Cliff Dahm, Peter Goodwin and Jay R. Lund to produce this article, “While the World Gains a Trillion Trees, the U.S. May Lose Nearly a Million Miles of Streams,” for the July 2020 edition of The Insider, a publication of the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM).

The article discusses how last month’s change to the scope of waters regulated federally under the Clean Water Act eliminates protections for ephemeral streams. It details how this change may lead to greater volumes of runoff flowing downstream at faster rates, resulting in higher floods and greater flood damage in more populated areas across the country.
