Woolpert Providing Military Airfield Planning and Conceptual Design to Defense Projects in Eastern Europe

The firm is working as a subconsultant to Louis Berger for the European Deterrence Initiative.

DAYTON, Ohio (Dec. 13, 2018) — Woolpert has been contracted for the European Deterrence Initiative (EDI), a multibillion-dollar U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) program enabling a capable and prepared operational presence for U.S. Air Forces, NATO allies and regional partners in Eastern Europe.

Woolpert, working as a subconsultant to the Louis Berger Group Inc., is providing master planning, programming and conceptual design support to multiple locations in Eastern Europe.

Rebecca Knolle, Woolpert project manager and a former U.S. Air Force civil engineer officer, said the firm’s previous and current tasks have included planning charrettes, as well as conceptual design strategies for parallel taxiways/emergency runways, hazardous cargo pads, live ordnance load areas, tactical fighter aircraft parking aprons and munitions storage areas across several NATO countries.

“In Poland, we are handling airfield upgrades that will comply with U.S., NATO and ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards,” Knolle said. “These projects will enable bilateral and multilateral exercises and training with our NATO allies and partners, and enhance prepositioning, improve infrastructure, and build capacity of our European allies and partners.”

Knolle said these are just a few of the pieces that support the EDI, formerly known as the European Reassurance Initiative.

“The EDI program is all about enabling strength, safety and responsiveness, and that requires proven and effective infrastructure,” Knolle said. “We’re honored to apply our more than 50 years of military planning and engineering work to support this effort.”
