Woolpert Wins GreenSpotLight Award for Environmental Performance

March 29, 2018

COLUMBUS, Ohio (March 29, 2018) — Woolpert was honored today with a 2018 GreenSpotLight Award, recognizing businesses with exemplary sustainability practices. The award is bestowed annually by Columbus GreenSpot, a city initiative with more than 17,000 members, and supports living and working greener in homes, businesses and communities throughout the area.

Woolpert’s Columbus office earned top honors this year in the Medium Business Category. Woolpert is an international architecture, engineering and geospatial (AEG) firm that employs close to 800 and has 25 offices nationwide. The Columbus office has a staff of 23.

In its selection spotlight, GreenSpot lauded several Woolpert initiatives. These include conserving energy by turning off office appliances, programming thermostats and lights, as well as recycling a wide variety of items like paper, batteries, cardboard, steel, LED and halogen light bulbs, and eye glasses.

“(Woolpert) sends out regular reminders about what is and is not recyclable and collected more than 2,500 pounds of recyclable material (last) year,” read the GreenSpot announcement. “Employees have biked about 768 miles last year going to and from work.”

Administrative Assistant Penny Hoover has spearheaded Woolpert’s participation in Columbus GreenSpot.

“There are just so many easy opportunities to reuse and recycle, and to keep items from going into landfills,” Hoover said. “So much of what we encounter in the office—the plastic around water bottles, paper towels and plastic utensils; the light bulbs that contain dangerous chemicals; all of the paper we go through—is recyclable. It’s just a case of choosing to do it every day.”

Hoover credited Woolpert Engineer and Project Manager Nathan Fischer with introducing the firm to GreenSpot in 2016, and lauded staff throughout the firm for furthering the cause.

“We just have to keep generating involvement, both in our office and beyond,” Hoover said. “We’ve reached out to others in our building and we continue to integrate sustainable design and other green practices into our projects—not only in Columbus, but firmwide. It’s just the right thing to do, and the best way to plan for the future.”
