Lidar Making Waves in Florida Beach Resilience

In 2022, Hurricane Ian and Tropical Storm Nicole barreled through St. Johns County, Fla. While devastating, the county was able to respond effectively because of one key strategy: they had used lidar technology to acquire coastal elevation data before and after the extreme weather events to monitor beach erosion and support dune maintenance.

Woolpert Senior Associate, Geospatial Project Manager Volkan Akbay and Woolpert Geospatial Program Director Rick Householder published an article in Lidar Magazine to explain why the data was pivotal in helping St. Johns County recover and why other coastal communities should consider implementing a similar lidar program.
