Woolpert Proudly Supports Kids in STEM Fields

As a firm centered on architecture, engineering and geospatial, Woolpert understands more than ever how the next generation of leading scientists, engineers and computer programmers are those with a true passion for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects. That’s why we’re more passionate than ever in promoting various STEM opportunities for kids.

  • Robotics Competition Sponsorship

It’s no secret that robots infused with artificial intelligence are expanding into automobiles, manufacturing plants, smart homes and virtually every space you can imagine. One day, robots will play a dominating role in society, and young students are already learning the engineering skills necessary to design these machines. To support this passion, Woolpert sponsors a local Dayton, Ohio robotics club called the BONDS. In 2016,
the BONDS made its debut, entering into the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics competition. Due to their hard work, the team progressed to the world championship and took home the rookie all-star award.

In Denver last month, our 2016 summer surveying intern Carlos Yosten and his high school robotics team at Denver East competed in the National Robotics Championships. Woolpert was both proud and excited to make a financial contribution to Carlos and his team to help fund this trip.

Woolpert also is in the process of creating a group of volunteers who can offer students, like Carlos, mentoring for their projects, as well as marketing and communications expertise to get their talents and hard work recognized. Our engineering and geospatial/UAS experts are excited to share their experience with students.

Stem Portfolio Judges

Already, Woolpert employees have given their time to the Dayton Regional STEM School, where they provided students with feedback on their presentation skills and overall aesthetics of their portfolio websites. The adults enjoyed the time as much as the students, with one of our volunteers expressing, “This is something I will do again and again. It was great speaking experience for these kids. And they were getting questions and feedback not only from panelists, but also from their peers.”

School Presentations

Our professionals regularly visit schools to lead discussions on a variety of STEM topics. Geospatial Aviation Practice Leader Tom Mackie recently presented on Geographical Technology to fifth-grade students at Harman Elementary School in Oakwood, Ohio. Afterward, fifth-grade social studies teacher Blane Savage remarked, “Tom’s presentation was engaging and thought-provoking; he also had a natural rapport with the students, which elicited numerous questions.”

Scholarship Sponsorship

Students looking to take their passion for STEM into college often need financial help to achieve their higher education dreams. Woolpert is honored to sponsor scholarships for deserving young students. On April 21, the Burt and Mullet Student Chapter at Ferris State (the chapter of National Society of Professional Surveyors) held its annual scholarship awards banquet where Woolpert presented a scholarship to Ferris State student Austin Garner.

Without individuals who are passionate about STEM subjects, Woolpert’s unique blend of engineering, geospatial expertise and architecture wouldn’t be possible. It’s important to foster a love for these skills, and we encourage professionals and individuals within the community to get involved in helping kids succeed in their STEM-related initiatives. It’s truly a rewarding experience.
