Background

Darlington Public School, on Gadigal Country near Sydney, underwent a major redevelopment to create modern, flexible learning environments that honour its cultural and historical legacy. To achieve design precision and site integration, fjcstudio engaged Woolpert for 3D models. Woolpert delivered detailed, spatially accurate digital representations that met regulatory and cultural requirements. 

Challenge

fjcstudio needed to assess solar studies, shadow impacts, and view analysis to ensure design harmony with the urban and cultural landscape. Regulatory approval required accurate simulations based on reliable spatial data. With Indigenous heritage and local identity central, a digital contextual model was crucial for cultural integration while meeting functional design needs. fjcstudio sought accurate, compatible models to reduce manual modelling time. 

Solution

Woolpert delivered purpose-built 3D models, including textured building representations and a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) for contextual analysis. The models met the precision required for local government approval, supporting shadow studies and solar access evaluations for the DA application. Optimised for BIM integration, the models enabled quick design adjustments and scenario testing. Woolpert’s expertise ensured data integrity, reduced in-house modelling needs and allowed fjcstudio to focus on cultural and design innovation. 

Results

fjcstudio transformed Darlington Public School, integrating Indigenous heritage through artworks and landscaping while creating modern learning spaces. Woolpert’s spatial models supported stakeholder collaboration and regulatory compliance. The project’s success was recognised at multiple international architecture awards, including World Building of the Year at WAF 2024.
