Woolpert led a team of experts who helped the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) provide a 3D laser scan of its newly constructed Buckhead Station Pedestrian Bridge. The bridge, located in the median of Georgia 400 at the north end of the Buckhead Station, crosses the interstate and provides pedestrian access to the station on the north end of the station platform.

The Woolpert team produced a 3D Revit model from the 3D scans, which were then rendered to create an executive fly-through presentation. The presentation was delivered to the MARTA executive board.

The project brought a unique service to the client by using laser-scanning technology to create BIM models of a built structure for the engineering, design and construction industries.

For this project, three-dimensional laser scanning was used to generate a point that was then transformed into horizontal and vertical images. This scanned data was tied to a high level of accuracy within a traverse network of scale by both horizontal and vertical control stations. Once the control imagery and point-cloud data were positioned and processed into the model, the team generated a 3D Revit model, from which other elements were then added—such as walls, doors, windows and structural members—to create a realistic 3D visualization and rendered walkthrough.
