Café 1201 at Old Dominion University

Background

This project focused on the design and construction phase services for the renovation of Café 1201 and catering kitchen at Old Dominion University, which is comprised of approximately 13,756 square feet of contiguous space located within the Webb Student Center.

Challenge

Prior to renovation, the space housed a pay once, all-you-can-eat concept. The university required more vendor-style food options and chose to renovate Café 1201 into a multi-vendor concept welcoming Steak ‘n Shake, Chick-fil-A, Qdoba and a homestyle vendor run by the university. The overarching project goal was to create an open, inviting and modern space uniquely branded to ODU.

Solution

The Waller, Todd & Sadler, a Woolpert Company, team provided full architectural, interior design, engineering and food service/equipment design services. The renovation provided space to support the dining component of the student center, including the renovation of the catering kitchen and the design and installation of the new retail food vendors. The complete renovation included interior spaces, upgrades, and reconfiguration of building systems, with renovation components including HVAC, plumbing, fire alarm and detection, fire suppression, and food service.

Outcome

The project team’s design opened up the existing space and used reflective, light gray terrazzo tile floors with blue accents to match ODU’s colors. The ceilings are exposed between floating clouds trimmed in brushed aluminum. Feature areas are highlighted by wooden slat ceilings. Though it was important to include the branding of each vendor, all the front counter faces use the same material for a consistent aesthetic and simple future vendor changes. LED lighting glows across the face of the counters.

Benefits

The client has expressed satisfaction with the fully renovated space, new food vendors and expanded space for the high-performing Chick-fil-A outlet.
