DoDEA’s 21st-century education initiative focuses on providing students with school environments that support teaching and learning through flexible and adaptable spaces. These cutting-edge schools consider innovations in education, curriculum delivery, technology, sustainability and energy conservation. As part of this expanding initiative, Woolpert assisted DoDEA with replacing DeLalio Elementary School at New River MCAS.

Undersized and plagued by an aging utility infrastructure system with excessive maintenance costs, the existing 50-year-old building was replaced by a new, 66,000-suqare-foot state-of-the-art educational facility. The new school design includes multiple 21st-century learning neighborhoods, information center, flex lab, centralized common/dining/performance space, stage, art studio and learning-impaired occupational/physical therapy rooms.

Designed to meet USGBC LEED for Schools 2009 Silver Certification requirements, the new school connects to the recently constructed gym/music room addition at the existing facility (which is in good condition). The existing facility remained in operation until the new school was complete; at that point, it was demolished and all remaining connections and site work were completed.
