Mengapur Mine Survey

Mine site development requires various layers of spatial data and balancing an everchanging cost versus accuracy equation. Many companies utilize existing or satellite data as a low-cost layer option moving to more accurate options as alternatives are refined. While opting for a low-cost execution is tempting, the consequences of basing decisions on flawed spatial data can prove detrimental.

Challenge

Menagpur is a Malaysian mine being developed using both aerial and ground surveying techniques. Comprehensive survey methodology provides certainty to pending decisions while delivering a rigorous spatial data layer to facilitate the mine for life.

Solution

Field surveys require sound networks of reliable permanent survey marks. Woolpert resurveyed 15 PSMs with a braced DGPS network adjustment. The mining company had only recently acquired an interest in the project; however, a fast review and validation was needed of the existing survey data.

We resurveyed existing drill hole collars supporting a reliable review of the mineral resource. The project team confirmed the claim corners suited the certified plans locations.

The team deployed a first-order lidar sensor and personnel to collect an accurate point cloud. Data points were collected at a better than 1m point spacing to accurately define the site’s terrain surface.

Results

The mining company’s existing data failed to meet regular accuracy standards likely due to inexperience or lack of appropriate equipment. Apparent savings by selecting the lowest cost tender are often overshadowed if survey data ends up being discarded.

We also provided 20cm digital colour site orthophotos complementing the lidar's spatial definition. Our field survey team established ground control points to tightly orientate all aerial photographs towards the ground. These also combine with terrain data showcasing the site’s 3D visualisations and proving especially useful to community consultation, investor summaries, and site planners.
