In 2018, the United States Army Corps of Engineers, along with Manson and the Shoalwater Bay Tribe, issued an emergency order to restore the Shoalwater Dune that had been knocked out by two large storms in the years prior. This dune provides coastal storm protection for the town and the health of a two-mile stretch of coastline. For four months in 2018, Woolpert surveyors conducted daily conditional topographic surveys along with pre- and post-dredge hydrographic surveys using multibeam and single-beam sonar.
