Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center Earns Design Award from Planning Commission

Waller, Todd & Sadler, a Woolpert Company, was honored Wednesday for its work on the groundbreaking facility.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (April 11, 2019) — On Wednesday, the Virginia Beach Planning Commission honored Waller, Todd & Sadler, a Woolpert Company, with a 2019 Planning Commission Design Award for its Virginia Beach Housing Resource Center. The firm earned a Merit Award in the Public Facilities category.

The $27 million, 63,000-square-foot Housing Resource Center is a three-story facility that includes dormitories with 49 beds for singles needing emergency shelter, 40 beds in short-term motel-style rooms for families, and 30 one-bedroom efficiency apartments for long-term residents.

It is one of the first facilities across the country to provide a consolidated, campus-style approach to supporting multiple housing groups and layered services with coordinated assessment and on-site case management. The Housing Resource Center was designed to support the efforts of the department of Virginia Beach Housing and Neighborhood Preservation by providing a one-stop shop of services, resources and training for at-risk individuals working toward permanent housing.

Woolpert Vice President William W. Schwegler said Waller Todd & Sadler, a Woolpert Company, appreciates the Virginia Beach Planning Commission’s selection of the Housing Resource Center for its Merit Award.

“This facility illustrates the continued importance that the city of Virginia Beach places on assisting those in need within our community,” Schwegler said. “We have been very fortunate to work with the city in envisioning a creative solution to serve the needs of the facility’s clients and staff, and to create a place that is welcoming. The facility provides a sense of community among the staff and clientele alike, helping people transition from homelessness to being self-sufficient and independent.”

Waller, Todd & Sadler was the architect of record on the project, and Woolpert provided civil engineering services prior to acquiring the architecture firm. S.B. Ballard Construction Company was the project contractor.

The Housing Resource Center also earned a 2019 American Public Works Association (APWA) Mid-Atlantic Chapter Project of the Year Award and is in the running to receive a national APWA award in May.
