Woolpert Hires Michael Hanowsky as Director of Operational Planning for Firm’s Strategic Consulting Group

SAN FRANCISCO (May 1, 2019) — Woolpert has hired Michael Hanowsky, Ph.D., as director of operational planning for the firm’s Strategic Consulting Group. Hanowsky brings nearly 20 years of experience in aviation, surface transportation and facilities consulting to the position.

“The global economy is just starting to realize the potential for the use of data to improve how capital planning, capital investment and operational decisions are made,” Hanowsky said. “Woolpert’s broad and deep knowledge of geospatial data, along with its engineering and architectural services, provides not only a tremendous foundation for developing data-driven operational and planning consulting services, but represents the type of fertile soil for leveraging ideas into key business opportunities for years to come.”

Hanowsky’s technical work includes airfield and airspace modeling tools, airfield planning, passenger flow and terminal simulation, forecasting, aviation data science and advanced analytics, decision analysis and software development for decision support tools. He has developed airfield and airspace models for complex, large hub airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.

Woolpert Strategic Consulting Managing Director Jeff Fitzgerald said that “having Mike lead our operations and decision support services is exciting; he brings unsurpassed credentials, and an infectious commitment to the success of our clients and our people.”

“I’ll be seeking to both build out our service offering for consulting in airport operations and contribute to innovation and enhancing client service across Woolpert’s portfolio,” Hanowsky said. “There is tremendous potential to enhance the value offered by Woolpert to our clients by delivering synergies between the operational consulting services that I’ll be working to develop with Woolpert’s highly successful and data-savvy aviation team.”

A former Science and Technology Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Fulbright Scholar, Hanowsky holds a doctorate and master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. Hanowsky is currently teaching a master’s-level course on the aviation industry at Berkeley.

Hanowsky also is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Airports Council International-North America and the Transportation Research Board subcommittee on Airfield and Airspace Capacity and Delay, where he serves as research coordinator.

He said he measures success by the number of people and clients he has helped.

“Woolpert is right-sized and able to respond quickly and flexibly to the needs of clients,” he said.
