Building Homes, Building Futures

Tom Mochty is just as comfortable pounding nails as he is solving complex client infrastructure challenges.

Mochty, who has worked at Woolpert for over 28 years, was recently named Infrastructure Sector Leader. His new title brings new responsibilities, yet he still makes time to help build homes for Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home.

A member of the Knights of Columbus, Mochty coordinates the group’s volunteer efforts for Habitat for Humanity builds across the Miami Valley. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternal benefit society that raises money to support community members in need.

Already an active member of his church, Mochty said that the Knights of Columbus “was just a natural way to get more involved with fundraising events and community outreach. I have been involved in the Knights of Columbus since 2006 as an officer and program leader,” he said.

For the past five years, Mochty has been responsible for publishing the Knights Xenia Council 1801’s newsletter. During that time, Mochty also led his council’s annual Habitat for Humanity home-building efforts. He organized groups of five to 10 brother Knights, along with their wives and children, to help build homes for local families in need.

The hard work of Habitat for Humanity builds has been more than worth it for Mochty. “It’s really great to see these families get the keys to their new homes,” he said. “They are always so excited and appreciative.”

Mochty recommends the Knights of Columbus for young men who are active in the Catholic church and want to get involved in sharing their love for their communities.

“We are just a group of guys who like to get together and help out where we can, whether it’s holding food pantry drives, delivering meals to the homeless, or providing Christmas gifts for widows, veterans and shut-ins,” he said. “We are all busy people, so the conscious effort of slowing down to get involved with those less fortunate is very humbling. It’s gratifying to help.”
