Woolpert Receives International Making Cities Livable Urban Design Award for Proscenium

The firm was recognized for showcasing suburban revitalization with this $60M development in Carmel, Ind.

CARMEL, Ind. (June 24, 2021) — Woolpert was honored with an International Making Cities Livable award for its design of Proscenium at the 57th IMCL conference. Proscenium is a more than $60 million, mixed-use development that is planning its grand opening for this fall in downtown Carmel, Ind.

For its 2021 urban design awards, the IMCL sought well-designed, suburban revitalization projects that embodied a natural fitness to purpose and that were socially and environmentally responsible. These projects took advantage of the opportunities of urban life, while reflecting, respecting and enhancing their place, culture and community.

Proscenium offers 200 apartments, 26 condominiums, parking for 490, 85,000-square-feet of office space, and 25,000-square-feet of restaurant and retail space across seven acres, which was repurposed from industrial and retail use in this upscale suburb of Indianapolis. The site includes a community green and a pedestrian promenade, which creates additional outdoor space for residents and the community. It also provides convenient connections to an adjacent government complex, a new public park, Veterans Way and the Monon Trail.

Woolpert Director of Design Tony Martin and Design Lead Will Tufts were responsible for both the planning and architectural design for the project, from the 10,000-foot view to the brick detailing. Martin said Proscenium embraces the urban reinvention of Carmel’s traditional, suburban community and provides an inviting threshold to the town’s rapidly densifying downtown.

“Proscenium has benefited from strong local leadership, a rails-to-trails backbone and an innovative, citywide master plan by acclaimed urbanist Jeff Speck to emerge as this vibrant, walkable and desirable community neighborhood,” Martin said. “We thank IMCL for this honor, as well as Novo Development Group and the city of Carmel for their inspiration, leadership and support. This has been an amazing project, and we’re excited to see this unique vision come to fruition.”
