Mekoryuk Breakwater Mapping and Surveying

Image
Mekoryuk, AK is a village on the remote island of Nunivak in the Bering Sea. The village had a breakwater that needed repairs under a mandate from the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). Woolpert surveyors flew to the island with a Riegl VZ400 to map the breakwater. To survey the state of the breakwater and obtain as much data as possible, the scan needed to happen during the lowest tide of the year. The Woolpert team static scanned the breakwater with a terrestrial 3D laser scanner by setting up many targets along the breakwater to get a full image without any shadows. The targets and scans were tied together to create a local project coordinate system and later tied into a global coordinate system once post processed. Final deliverables included high resolution gridded XYZs.
